Safety and Risk Management for School Trips and Programs
Your school trips complement classroom learning in profound ways, giving students confidence, perspective, and a deeper understanding of the world. Leading students beyond campus also carries real responsibility – to the students in your care, to the families who trust you, and to the faculty and chaperones who make these programs happen.
Cornerstone helps schools provide these life-changing experiences to students with confidence.
What Faculty and Program Leaders Are Managing Today
Before a program departs, you're planning itineraries, vetting third-party providers and homestays, gathering student health information, preparing faculty and chaperones, and answering to families and school leadership – often while maintaining a full teaching load.
Even a well-planned program can meet the unexpected: a student falls ill, a provider changes course, the weather turns. Student travel carries real responsibility, and Cornerstone brings the experience to help you meet it.
You don’t have to do this alone.

One Team Across Risk, Medical, and Mental Health
Safety and Risk Management
Risk management advisors who have advised over 100 organizations through real incidents, from minor to life-threatening. They help you anticipate risk, prepare faculty and staff, and respond when something goes wrong.
Medical Advising
Board-certified emergency physicians with wilderness and travel medicine training. They help you strengthen student health screening, medical protocols, and response to illness and injury when care is far away.
Mental Health Advising
Licensed clinicians who have led programs and supported young people in the field. They help you prepare for the behavioral and emotional needs of students and staff. Our role is triage and support, never treatment.
Rooted in the School and Experiential Education Community
Cornerstone's leadership holds governance and committee roles with the organizations that shape standards for student travel and experiential education: the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), the Gap Year Association (GYA), and the Association for Experiential Education (AEE). We also partner with iSEEN, the Independent School Experiential Education Network.
We've planned programs, prepared faculty, and managed real incidents in the field. We bring that experience to your school.

Ways to Work With Cornerstone
Membership
Choose membership when your school runs programs year-round or at high frequency and you want an extension of your team. Membership includes advisor hours across risk, medical, and mental health, more than 90 protocols, templates, and practical resources, monthly webinars and member networking, and emergency response support.
Consulting
Choose consulting when you need focused support for a specific initiative, or expert review to validate and strengthen your existing systems. No membership is required. Projects range from faculty and chaperone training and crisis-plan exercises to third-party and homestay review, roles and responsibility mapping, and comprehensive program reviews.
-
Either works. Membership fits schools running programs throughout the year that want ongoing access to our risk, medical, and mental health advisors. A consulting project fits a specific program or initiative and requires no membership. We can help you find the right starting point.
-
Your faculty and chaperones are educators first, not risk professionals. Before a program departs, we help get your team ready with practical, scenario-based preparation, so they understand their role, know how to make and document decisions in the field, and feel ready for the health, behavioral, and communication situations that come up on the road. If something develops while they're traveling, they can reach us to work through it in the moment. Final decisions stay with your school; our job is to make sure the people leading feel confident and supported, not alone.
-
Yes. We help schools build a consistent vetting process and review specific providers, homestay arrangements, transportation, and partner programs. The goal is a repeatable process your team can maintain as programs and partnerships change, not a one-time checklist.
-
Cornerstone is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We help schools translate duty-of-care responsibilities into practical plans, provider review, faculty preparation, and documentation, and we can flag where a question is best confirmed with your counsel or insurer.
-
No. Cornerstone advises your school's leaders and response team. We do not diagnose, provide therapy or clinical treatment, or establish an individual provider relationship with a student. Our medical and mental health professionals help you evaluate concerns, identify next steps, and coordinate with appropriate local or remote care.
