Safety and Risk Management for Experiential Education Programs
Experiential education and service-learning programs expose young travelers to new places, cultures, and challenges. These experiences help shape lives, build character, and form more globally aware and independent young adults. Operating these programs requires taking real responsibility for the young people for the young people in your care, far from home.
Cornerstone works alongside experiential education operators to manage the real risks of taking young people into the world.
What Experiential Education Operators Are Managing Today
Before a program departs, you're enrolling and screening young participants, vetting in-country partners and homestays, coordinating transportation and logistics, and recruiting and training the field leaders who deliver the experiences. Much of this work happens across languages, time zones, and constantly shifting conditions. Your time is always in high demand.
Even a well-run program can and will encounter the unexpected. A participant gets hurt, a partner falls through, the weather turns – risk is inherent in travel. You need systems your team can rely on.
You don’t have to do this alone.

One Team Across Risk, Medical, and Mental Health
Safety and Risk Management
Risk management advisors who have advised over 100 organizations through real incidents, from minor to life-threatening. They help you anticipate risk, prepare your team, and respond when something goes wrong.
Medical Advising
Board-certified emergency physicians with wilderness and travel medicine training. They help you strengthen participant screening, field medical protocols, and response to illness and injury when care is far away.
Mental Health Advising
Licensed clinicians who have led trips and worked with young travelers in the field. They help you prepare for the behavioral and emotional needs of participants and staff. Our role is triage and support, never treatment.

We Participate in the Experiential Education and Youth Travel Community
Cornerstone's leadership holds governance and committee roles with the organizations that shape standards for experiential education: the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), the Gap Year Association (GYA), and the Association for Experiential Education (AEE).
We've led programs, trained field staff, and managed real incidents ourselves. We bring that experience to your team.
What Members Say
Cornerstone has provided a supportive community that has been essential over the last several years. I have found it very comforting to know that we have Dave and his team in our back pocket if we are ever in a sticky situation or need another perspective to move forward. The resource library has been super helpful as we tighten our program policies, vendor vetting, and management of common risks in the field. I would definitely recommend working with Cornerstone.
