Safety and Risk Management for Outfitters and Adventure Guides
Adventure connects people with new places, challenges, and perspectives. Those experiences often unfold in dynamic environments where weather, terrain, water, guest needs, and available resources can change quickly.
Cornerstone works alongside outfitters, guide services, and adventure travel organizations to strengthen guide decision-making, field protocols, medical and mental health preparedness, and organizational response systems.
What Outfitters and Guide Services Are Managing Today
Every season asks more of the people running guided programs. You are screening guests with widely different experience, fitness, and expectations, training seasonal and contracted guides, setting go, no-go, and turnaround thresholds, managing equipment, transportation, and local partners, and planning for the day emergency services are hours away – often with a lean team and a short season.
A concern involving one guest can affect the group, guides, local partners, transportation, home-office staff, and the organization's broader operations. You need systems your guides can confidently use in the field.
You do not have to build these systems alone.
How Cornerstone Supports Outfitters
Here's how Cornerstone works as an extension of your team before, during, and after the season.
Before the Season Begins
We help owners, managers, and guides strengthen the systems that support guests and staff before they enter the field.
Program audits
Field protocols and decision-making thresholds
Emergency action and crisis response planning
Third-party provider and local partner review
Scenario-based exercises and emergency drills
During the Season
No plan is perfect. We help members assess changing conditions and make decisions grounded in their programs and people.
Medical and mental health triage and guidance
Escalation considerations
Field-to-base coordination
Guest, family, and stakeholder communications
Human-centered support for guests, guides, and staff
Decisions affecting staffing, itinerary, and program continuity
After an Incident or Season
We help organizations take stock after an incident or at season's end, care for the people involved, and carry what they learn forward.
Facilitate operational debriefs
Review incident and near-miss documentation
Update protocols, training, and communication systems
Carry lessons across locations, activities, and future seasons
One Team Across Risk, Medical, and Mental Health
Safety and Risk Management
Risk management advisors who have managed real incidents and help evaluate hazards, set field thresholds, prepare guides, and build systems that work in the field.
Medical Advising
Physicians who help organizations strengthen guest screening, field medical protocols, and response to illness and injury in remote and austere situations.
Mental Health Advising
Mental health professionals who help teams prepare for behavioral and emotional needs among guests and guides. Our role is triage and support, never treatment.
Grounded in Real Field Experience
We're active members of the America Outdoors Association and the Adventure Travel Trade Association, and we work directly with outfitters and guide services across the industry.
We've run trips, managed guides, and handled real incidents on the ground. We bring that experience to your team.

-
Yes. Cornerstone works with owner-operated outfitters and small seasonal teams as well as larger adventure companies managing multiple activities, locations, and destinations. Membership tiers and consulting projects can be matched to the organization’s operational needs and complexity.
-
Yes, through our Tour Operators and DMCs page, which covers companies selling tours and travel programs: itineraries that bring together destinations, lodging, transportation, and activities. Our focus here is organizations whose product is the guided experience itself: the rafting trip, the climb, the guided day in the field.
-
Yes. We help organizations strengthen health information-gathering, activity eligibility, and program-readiness processes. Our advisors support organizational decision-making; final participation decisions remain with the outfitter or program.
We can review health forms and action plans, identify questions that may warrant follow-up with a guest or healthcare provider, and help establish consistent processes for making and documenting readiness decisions. Cornerstone does not diagnose, treat, or establish an individual clinical relationship with a guest.
-
Yes. We can review field handbooks, activity protocols, guide onboarding, competency expectations, certifications, safety briefings, equipment practices, and documentation systems. Our goal is to help your team develop field-ready tools and repeatable practices that support sound decisions without unnecessarily limiting guide judgment.

All members can contact Cornerstone for help managing an emergency or significant incident.
Once engaged, Cornerstone serves as an active responder within the broader crisis response team. We assist with the overall crisis response coordination, communications, human-centered support, medical and mental health guidance, and decisions affecting guests, staff, evacuation, and program continuity.
-
No. These services are complementary. A travel assistance provider performs a specific role, such as connecting an individual with care or coordinating medical, security, transportation, or evacuation services.
Cornerstone acts as an extension of your response team, helping the Incident Command function manage the overarching response, communications, and human-centered support. Most of our work occurs before an event, strengthening prevention and preparedness.
-
Cornerstone does not provide legal or insurance advice. We can review how eligibility requirements, waivers, safety briefings, field protocols, incident documentation, and other operational systems work together. Questions requiring legal interpretation should be confirmed with qualified counsel, insurers, land managers, or the appropriate regulator.
